My ResearchMy name is Maddie Orloff and for my CCJS Honors Thesis at the University of Maryland I chose to research the marginalized population of incarcerated pregnant women. Within my research I chose to specifically investigate the process of attachment and how it is facilitated by prison nursery programs. Using theory and prior research I crafted a proposed study that would be a stepping stone for learning more about this relationship and group of women. For my public dissertation I wanted to learn more about how prison nurseries are perceived in the media. This idea came to me while reading the new Colleen Hoover book Reminders of Him which references prison nursery programs. I found this interesting because I didn't realize these programs were very well known. I decided to watch the Hulu DocuSeries Born Behind Bars which covers the stories of the women in the Wee Ones Nursery in Indiana Women's Prison. I crafted this blog as a way to comment on the DocuSeries and compare it with my research and what we know about prison nursery programs in practice in addition to their perception in media.
